Club Newsmakers
Tues., Jan. 8, at 9:30 a.m., Robert Vitillo, Executive Director, Catholic Campaign for Human Development, will discuss the causes of chronic poverty in America and offer evidence of effective community-based solutions that permanently break the poverty cycle. . . . Wed., Jan. 9, at 9 a.m., Moises Naim, Editor and Publisher of Foreign Policy, and Paul A. Laudicina, Vice President, Global Business Policy Council.
Panelists to Discuss Problems of School Violence
The Club's Forums Committee will sponsor a discussion on Wed., Jan. 16, 9:30-11 a.m., examining preventive solutions to school violence and bullying. Forums moderator Joe David, a former teacher and author of "The Fire Within" and "Teacher of the Year", will lead the discussion in which four panelists will address the question, each from a different perspective. The panel will be Dr. Stanton E. Samenow, clinical psychologist; Delaware Attorney General M. Jane Brady; former U.S. Secretary of Labor Bill Brock, and educator Greg MacDonald from Washington Montessori Institute at Loyola University (MD). NPC to Host Forum on Funding Disease Research
On Wed., Jan. 9, 9:30-11 a.m., the NPC Forums Committee will host a panel discussion on "Funding Disease Research: What Does All the Money Mean?" Despite impressive increases in funding, the national disease advocacy organizations in the past five years have become much more competitive in their efforts to receive public funding dollars for research. Panelists will include Bob Cook-Deegan, M.D., a molecular biologist; Morton Kondracke, Executive Editor of Roll Call; Rick Klausner, M.D., Director of The Case Institute, and former Illinois Congressman John Edward Porter, who chaired the House Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee that funds NIH. Moderator will be Elliot A. Ryan, Editor of the International Alliance for Learning E-newsletter. This forum is free and open to the public. Reservations are required at 662-7501.
Photojournalist Program
The NPC Photo Committee has re-scheduled its seminar, "New Directions in Photojournalism", for Tues., Jan. 15, 7-9 p.m. This program, postponed from Sept. 12, will feature five leading photojournalists, including Pulitzer Prize winners and White House photographers Dirck Halstead, David Hume-Kennerly, Susan Walsh, Tom Kennedy, David Valdez and moderator Jim Wallace. No charge to attend, but reserve at 662-7501.

NPC Inaugural Dinner
John Aubuchon will be feted as the 95th president of the National Press Club at a black-tie dinner on Sat., Jan. 19. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7:30. Tickets are $75 per person. Reserve at 662-7501.
Member Book Rap
NPC member Martin Tolchin, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of The Hill, and his wife, Susan Tolchin, Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University, will be featured at a book rap Wed., Jan. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Reliable Source Committee Room. The Tolchins will be discussing their latest book "Glass Houses: Congressional Ethics and the Politics of Venom." The book traces how ethics has become a partisan, political battleground on Capitol Hill. This is their sixth book together. Publishers Weekly called it "an adroit, convincing examination of the ethical pressures and problems that continue to confront our representatives in Congress." Attendance is free to all members and accompanied guests.
NPC Annual Meeting
The National Press Club will hold its annual meeting at noon on Fri., Jan. 18. John Aubuchon will assume the presidency from outgoing President Dick Ryan and outline his plans for the Club in 2002.
NPC Aficionados to See Arena Stage Songfest, "Blues in the Night"
Join a group of fellow National Press Club members at Arena Stage's latest smash hit, "Blues in the Night". It's a collection of some of the finest blues songs and arrangements of all time. You will hear songs popularized by artists from Bessie Smith to Billy Strayhorn, Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer, and other artists--sung by a trio of talented women with incredible voices. The Washington Post gave an enthusiastic review, calling it "a musical to remember. . . . There hasn't been a better musical performance in DC theater all year." The NPC group will attend the performance on Thurs., Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at $35.25 each, a 30 percent discount. Journalism Conference With IRE, Sat., Jan. 26
The NPC's Professional Affairs Committee and Investigative Reporters and Editors are holding a conference at the Club on Sat., Jan. 26. The day-long conference will focus on covering the war on terrorism and on other issues likely to come to the forefront in 2002. The fee for NPC and IRE members is $50. Club members do not need to be members of IRE to attend. The Club is open on Saturday, so members can lunch in the Reliable Source. Kirk Douglas, Author, Toughs It Out Before NPC Audience Jan. 16
Legendary tough-guy actor Kirk Douglas comes to the Club on Wed., Jan. 16, for a book and author dinner. A best-selling author, Douglas will discuss his latest book, "My Stroke of Luck". The author dinner begins at 5:45 p.m. with his discussion, Q&A and book signing to follow. Copies of Douglas' book will be provided for sale and inscription, and outside copies of his books will not be allowed. Price for the dinner is $16 for members and $28 for their guests.
