NPC on Pearl Kidnapping
In a Jan. 30 statement, NPC President John Aubuchon denounced the kidnapping of Daniel Pearl, saying: "The National Press Club condemns the kidnapping of Daniel Pearl, The Wall Street Journal reporter missing since Jan. 23 in Pakistan, and asks his captors to release him immediately. Holding Mr. Pearl or harming him in any way will do nothing to change U.S. government policies. Mr. Pearl is an internationally known reporter and, like all journalists for American news organizations, operates independently of the U.S. government. We appeal for Mr. Pearl's immediate release to his wife, who is expecting their first child."

President, and still a winner! John Aubuchon, center, and wife Kemi happily accepted the trophy in the Club's "Super Bowl of Chili" from Fred Parker of the Hard Times Cafe in a boisterous ceremony in the Reliable Source Feb. 2. The Aubuchons' recipe for their award-winning "Damn Good Chili" is a closely guarded family secret. This is their second win. PHOTO BY JOHN METELSKY |

Jeffords Believes He Has Achieved a New Balance
Almost nine months after Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont bolted the Republican Party to become an independent, thus tipping the balance of power in the Senate chamber, he appears compelled to continue to try to explain himself. He told the Feb.1 NPC Luncheon he believes that by switching, "the issues I so deeply cared about would be back on the agenda, would be given due consideration, would be advanced." He said now "the Democrats have a seat at the table and will be part of the final decision-making process." Core issues that demand debate, he said, include a national energy policy, the economic stimulus package and annual spending bills including proper expenditures on education. He said states are saddled with "enormous financial burdens that drain funds from other educational needs," thus impeding their ability to provide the programs and services needed to improve overall student achievement. In education, he said, "we still have a long way to go."

Browne: "No Ability to Predict Attacks Today"
Dr. John C. Browne, Director, Los Alamos National Laboratory, came to the Club Jan. 31 to discuss the opportunity for a new compact between government and the scientific community following Sept. 11. He did by illustrating how use-inspired research has benefited us thus far. But, he said, "We have no ability today to predict attacks." Browne reported that our nuclear stockpile, however, is secure and that Los Alamos is prepared if someone were to attack. At the same time, targeting of nuclear power plants "certainly is a possibility". He suggested that no single field of science will dominate in the fight against terrorism. "The greatest advances will be made at the borders between scientific fields." Brown concluded: "I believe the science community is poised for yet another period of great discoveries. . . and, in the process, improve national security and help defeat the threat of terrorism."

Surgeon General Faces Questions About Anthrax
Questions about anthrax and the health system's response were raised at the appearance of Surgeon General David Satcher at the Club Luncheon Mon., Feb. 4. Dr. Satcher admitted that the government was not adequately prepared for the anthrax attack, noting that many communities do not even have functioning boards of health. He said there is a likelihood of another such attack, "because it is so easy to do." Even more devastating than anthrax, he said, would be smallpox, which cause 300 million deaths worldwide during the 20th Century. "Unlike anthrax, smallpox is very contagious and can spread rapidly throughout the population," he said. Dr. Satcher, who is leaving office next week, said that smoking still remains a health problem. "Smoking is responsible for more cancer deaths among women than breast cancer," he said. Another health problem he cited is obesity, particularly among children. Too many schools do not require physical education in grades kindergarten through 12, he said.
