Congratulations to Peter Blank, winner of the Fourth Quarter (2001) NPC Fitness Award. Blank, who edits the tax letter at Kiplinger Washington Editors, has been a dedicated user of the Fitness Center for 16 years--starting shortly after it first opened. He is shown here doing dumbell presses to build the triceps and deltoids. Friends "talked me into going out and lifting weights after work," he said, and strength training quickly became a habit. Blank says his devotion to 40-minute workouts, three to four times weekly, has not only helped him to relax, but is a great complement to his regular running. He runs 4-6 miles three or four times a week. Blank's advice to those starting out: "Take baby steps at first. Once you see the improvement, it's a powerful incentive to keep going." Why exercise so much? "Because I am trying to keep up with Beth, my six-year-old daughter." Is it working? "I'm still trying," groans Peter. Fitness Award winners receive a $50 gift certificate for a healthy meal in the Fourth Estate, which will probably be Peter's favorite combination of salads and rice. -- APRIL TAYLORPHOTO BY JOHN METELSKY |

Susan Eisenhower, President of the Eisenhower Institute and granddaughter of late U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, speaks to member Doris Margolis, who arranged her Feb. 11 NPC Luncheon talk on defeating terrorism and heading off potential threats to world peace. PHOTO BY CHRISTY BOWE |
Susan Eisenhower: U.S. Needs Russia as an Ally to Help in Fight Against International Terrorism
America needs to work with Russia to overcome the threat of global terrorism, Susan Eisenhower told the Feb. 11 NPC Luncheon. Eisenhower, the granddaughter of the late U.S. President, is President of the Eisenhower Institute, a foreign policy think tank. She said that our former Cold War enemy is now "the linchpin in our War on Terrorism," and we can benefit from their experience in Afghanistan in the 1980s and currently in Chechnya. She called for rethinking our priorities for an arms buildup, which Russians interpret as a possible threat. "We cannot win the War on Terrorism without the international community, and that means nations who are not normally our allies," she said. Addressing another potential flashpoint, Eisenhower urged the administration to "think hard" about balanced relations with India and Pakistan, two nuclear nations. "We need to be an "honest broker" and not take sides," she said.

Ridge: Home Defense Has Many Frontlines
Director of Homeland Security Tom Ridge insisted at the NPC Feb. 7 Luncheon, "I have all the power I need" to wage a successful war against home front terrorism. But he warned that there will be no clear-cut "victory day" as in the conventional combat of the past. Domestic security is already improved, but more progress is needed to tighten border controls and to track down illegal aliens, he added. There is also the need to protect nuclear facilities, to expand the search for antidotes to biological weapons and to enhance hospital readiness "in the event of the unthinkable." With regard to illegal immigrants, former Pennsylvania Governor Ridge said people expect and appreciate visitors to the U.S. to say, "I like this place," but it is important for our nation to see to it that these visitors "leave when they said they would" when their visas expire.
