The Committee Room will be renamed the McClendon Room in honor of the late Sarah McClendon, long-time Club member and former vice president as well as an institution among the Washington press corps for five decades. Former Club President John Cosgrove is planning a ceremony to mark the room's renaming, which the Board of Governors approved at its May 19 meeting. Spring Meeting: Bylaws Amendment and LuncheonAt the Spring general membership meeting of the National Press Clubnoon Wed., June 4a change in the bylaws will be brought before the membership. The proposed amendment will add new Section 5 to Article IV: "The Board of Governors can allow candidates for Associate Membership, who would have been admitted as members were it not for the cap on the category, to temporarily use the Club facilities upon payment of a fee determined by the Board." Lunch, as shown at right from the January 17 meeting, will be served.

Memorial Day Event Makes America Unique
"Rituals are a part of citizenship . . . a common bonding with those ideas and ideals that make America unique among nations." Ossie Davis, award-winning actor, thus described the National Memorial Day Concert he would host for the 10th consecutive year on the U.S. Capitol lawn Sun., May 25. Davis, addressing the May 23 Club Luncheon, was joined by fellow performers Joe Mantegna and Gena Rowlands in paying tribute to the fallen and the veterans of past wars. Davis, an Army veteran of World War II, said he opposed the war in Iraq and defended the right of those in the arts to speak out on such issues. Actor Ronald Reagan spoke out on issues, he noted, "and he became President". He described his own pacifisim as "doing peace work on the Hollywood plantation." This is the last call for members and their guests to sign on for the Mon., June 2, NPC Spring Golf Tournament. It's a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Forest Greens Golf Club, Triangle, VA.
