6:30 PM  Lynne Olson (NPC Book Event)
Description:

Lynne Olson Discusses Book on US, Britain in WWII

Lynne Olson, former White House correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, will discuss her latest historical work, “Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood with Britain in its Darkest, Finest Hour,” at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, March 23 in the Bloomberg Room of the National Press Club, at 529 14th St., NW in Washington, D.C.

“Citizens of London” is the behind-the-scenes story of how the United States forged its wartime alliance with Britain, told from the perspective of three key American players: Edward R. Murrow, head of CBS News in Europe; Averell Harriman, the millionaire who ran FDR’s Lend-Lease program in London; and John Gilbert Winant, the former New Hampshire governor who became the new U.S. ambassador to England after Joseph Kennedy quit. These three helped convince a cautious President Roosevelt and reluctant American public to back the British at a time when Britain stood on the brink of defeat.

Olson looks at the roles of other honorary “citizens of London,” ranging from Dwight D. Eisenhower, the first commander of U.S. forces in Britain, to Tommy Hitchcock, a world-famous former polo star and fighter pilot who helped save the Allies’ bombing campaign against Germany. And she examines the transformations of both Washington, D.C. and London as cities in the wake of the conflict.

Lynne Olson is the author of “Troublesome Young Men: The Rebels Who Brought Churchill to Power and Helped Save England” and is the co-author with husband Stanley Cloud of “The Murrow Boys: Pioneers on the Front Line of Broadcast Journalism” and “A Question of Honor: The Kosciuszko Squadron, Forgotten Heroes of World War II.”

Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing for $28. Proceeds benefit the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library, and no outside books are permitted.

Reservations are required.  RSVP at opus@press.org or call 202-662-7523.

6:30 PM  Roxana Saberi Memoir (NPC Book Event)
Description:

Journalist Roxana Saberi, whose imprisonment in Iran last year captured the world’s attention, will discuss her book, "Between Two Worlds: My Life and Captivity in Iran" at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7 in the Ballroom of the National Press Club.

Born and raised in North Dakota, Saberi, who has freelanced for NPR, BBC, ABC Radio, and Fox News, was living in Tehran in January 2009 when four men forced their way into her apartment and arrested her. She was harshly interrogated, accused of espionage, placed in solitary confinement, and prohibited from contacting her family. Under intense pressure and threats of imprisonment for life, Saberi confessed to espionage, a charge she quickly came to regret. Once Saberi was released from solitary confinement into the main prison, she had the opportunity to speak with other prisoners –student activists, members of religious minorities, humanitarian workers –and heard them talk of their deep convictions. Saberi realized she had to recant her false confession and stand up to her persecutors. Due to broad-based international pressure, she was released from prison on May 11, 2009. Through the prism of her interactions with her cellmates and captors, Saberi provides insight into Iranian society, the Islamic regime, and U.S.-Iran relations, shedding light on developments taking place today in tumultuous Iran.

THIS IS A TICKETED EVENT . The event is a fundraiser for The Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library.Tickets are $5 per person, payable at the door. Please reserve at opus@press.org Copies of the book will be available at the event for $26. If you would like to pre-purchase a book by April 1, the $5 admission charge will be waived.
